Our First Outdoor Carnaval Rehearsal is this weekend! Vem Sambar Practice Video!

This past Sunday we finished learning the Samba dance, and as promised, our follow-along video tutorial is below. I've written the choreography phrases and the sequence in the notes section of the video ~ I hope this is helpful. Thank you!

Next, we move on to the next phase of our journey to our first Outdoor Rehearsal this Sunday! Gone will be the walls, mirrors and hardwood floors, and we will have lots of open space all around us. This rehearsal will prepare us for the actual parade performance experience where we will be surrounded by the elements, the audiences and cameras. If you are new to Carnaval, we will guide you through this, step by step.
What to expect when we go outdoors...
Please Note the time and location for our last 4 Rehearsals:
*Sundays May 3, May 10, May 17 and Dress Rehearsal Saturday May 23.
*12pm-2pm at Visitacion Valley Middle School, 1971 Visitacion Ave., SF, CA 94134
Thank you so much Gina Patterson for hosting us in your space!
Please arrive on time and check in with your Section leaders who will take attendance.
Please dress in layers as it can be windy and weather can be variable.
Please come dressed in your workout clothes as there are only 2 restrooms and there are no changing rooms.
Please bring your own water bottles, label them and make sure you keep track of your belongings. Let's pick up after ourselves upon departure please.
Please wear sunscreen, a hat and protect your eyes as needed.
Please be patient as we slowly find our groove in this wide open space. No matter how many times we've done Carnaval, going outdoors for the first time always feels a little disorienting but it's also exciting! Dudley and I will guide you and direct this process.
As usual, out of respect for everyone's busy schedules, we do start and end on time. Thank you!
AGENDA:
12:00PM - Dudley and I will check in with all the section leaders and review the agenda for the day.
12:05-12:15pm - Section Leaders will huddle with their sections and then get organized into your placements.
Please familiarize yourselves with your spots ahead of time to make this process easier. Thank you!!
12:15PM - Dudley and I will lead a short warm up.
12:40PM - We will practice all the dances in the following order. We may do this a couple of times so you get used to your placements before traveling:
Rie y Llora
Ven Sambar
Vivito y Coleando
1:15PM - Next, we will practice walking at a slow steady pace, while staying in our lines and rows and maintaining our spacing; finding our flow together patiently and collectively. We will repeat this as needed.
1:30PM - If all goes well, we will practice dancing the choreography once through while traveling. This is where we practice finding our flow collectively. It will take a few rounds of this practice, so we will patiently give ourselves the time, the space and the grace to learn to move together as one.
1:45PM - Closing Notes - Leaders will check in with dancers for questions and any notes. We all pick up our belongings and exit the schoolyard and parking lot. We need to be out of the Schoolyard and Parking Lot by 2pm. Thank you!!!

Our Tiny Dancers Coordinator is the talented Rose Balderian. Please email her asap if you haven't already and you are planning to have your kiddos parade with us: rosebalderian@gmail.com . Steffy Angeles will be leading the kids who want to dance, in movements so they can dance along with us. Thank you Rosie and Steffy!
We are working with the vendor on our Beautiful Carnaval T-Shirts! We will email the T-shirt Sales Volunteers, so you can be the first to know when the t-shirts will be delivered to ODC. Thank you!
This year's theme was co-created using the feedback and suggestions that we received from all of you, describing how you experience participating in Carnaval with LDG. We hope you like it and that you see your sentiments are reflected in our Theme Statement attached. Thank you to Raquel Ponce de Leon for working on the Graphic Design for this year.
